The first Penny Black stamps bearing Queen Victoria's head go on sale, 5 days before the official date of issue.



1931   US President Herbert Hoover opened the tallest building in the world, the 102 storey Empire State Building.  On Fifth Avenue, New York it stands 1250ft (380m) high.



1967   Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu married at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. They had a civil ceremony with 100 guests. The wedding cake was 6 tiers high. After the reception they flew to Palm Springs for a two day honeymoon.
